continuity task

We started by brainstorming ideas of different genres that we could use such as horror and romantic comedy, looking at where we would film it and what the story lines could be. After discussing our ideas we decided that the romantic comedy idea would be the best choice, as we have seen more romantic comedies and we had more ideas about location and props. We also have an interest in this genre so thought it would be the better decision.

Then we started to plan our idea making a list of all the props we needed, including the people we were going to ask to act in our filming task. We also had props such as a magazine and the thought about the types of clothes we wanted them to wear in the scene. We decided on the location of a bedroom as it is an easily recognisable setting that appeals to girls and adds to the type of genre. We also drew a storyboard to help us when it came to filming, to know what shots we needed to get, with the right angles, so it looks right when we edit the footage. We also had to organise our actors, including deciding who we wanted in the task and organise the time and place of the filming, so that everyone could be at the filming. We did not need a shooting script as we were filming in one location so it wasn’t needed.

Next we started the filming process using the camera and tripod to make sure the filming was steady. We set up the camera in the right position making sure we got everything in the shot and didn’t have any unwanted items visible within the shot. We then ran through what the actors had to do and say in the shot before filming and then we recorded our footage. We did this for each shot making sure we got the shots we needed. Such as when we were filming the match on action where we had to film either side of the door making sure our actor looked and moved the same way in both shots so that when we edited it flowed and looked right. However we did have some problems whilst filming because afterwards we realised that we had accidentally filmed over some of the other footage and so had to go back and film some of the shots again. Another problem we had was finding suitable places for the camera on the tripod as the room was small so we had to go into the corners so we could still film and the camera was placed as far away back as possible so we could get both actors into the same frame.

When we had finished the filming we then started to edit our footage. We filmed more than one of some of the shots so we started by looking through them and deciding which one was the best and then ordering them and split some of the clips to make them shorter as we did need some of clip. When we had looked through every clip, deleting the ones where mistakes were made and choosing from the best ones, we then put the clips into the timeline. We also experimented with some effects using a fade in at the beginning of one as it made flow better than just using a straight cut and we also slowed another clip down as it looked like it moved to fast. We did have one problem with splitting the match on actions clip through the door as we were not able to cut it exactly right but we kept cutting the clip and we think that we improved the final clip.

Over all I think that the finished product had some strengths to it including the types of camera angles used as they show the three rules of continuity and frame the actors in the shot. However there are some weaknesses for example I don’t think that the editing was a slick as it could have been in some parts as it doesn’t quite flow. Although I think that the product as a whole does show the three rules of continuity well.

Continuity Task Introduction

The task involves filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he or she then exchanges two sentences of dialogue. The task should demonstrate the three principles of continuity: match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 rule.

introduction

In this blog i will be looking at practical production work and a description of the processes of planning and research also a record of the production processes and an evaluation of the final product.

rules of continuity

The three rules of continuity are used in this extract of Skins to provide a range of different effects and camera angles.

For example in the opening scene when she is talking to her dad the 180 degree rule is used as they are having a conversation about 0:33 into the clip. The camera stays on one side of the line to keep the characters on opposite sides of the screen and to make it seem like they are looking at each other. This also happen when she is talking to Cassie at the table at about 5:00 into the clip as they are disagreeing with each other so kept in different frames.

At the beginning of the clip match on action is used in the kitchen scene when they are cooking as it cuts from different angles it also uses medium shots and close ups. Which makes it seem like they are all moving around the kitchen at the same time and like it was filmed all at the same time, when it may not have been.

Also shot-reverse shot is used when she is sitting on her bed and it cuts to the back of her sitting on the bed and then to the front again. Showing her room and how alone she is physically and emotionally.
